A facelift may not be enough to achieve a rejuvenated, youthful face, says Dr. Gary Horndeski, a plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas. While many people address aging lips with fillers and implants, he says a “lip lift” may be more effective in creating a complete facial rejuvenation.
“As we get older, the lips get longer, they turn down at the corners, they get thinner and the area around the mouth gets loose,” he said in a statement. “An old mouth makes a face look old even after a facelift. If you don’t address the mouth, you can’t have a youthful face. On average, you can make a face look about five years younger by adding mouth procedures.”
With the lip lift, the upper lip is shortened by making an incision in the crease under the nose and repositioning or excising the tissue to create a shorter, poutier mouth with turned-up corners and less skin in the nasolabial area, if necessary.
“If you look at pictures of young models in magazines, you’ll notice that they have a short upper lip and a pouty, turned-up mouth,” Dr. Horndeski said. “Those are characteristics that are not achieved by simply increasing the size of the lip with injections. With lips, bigger is not always better. It’s about achieving total aesthetic harmony in the entire mouth area as well as the rest of the face.”
Also, because the incision is made in the crease below the nose, the scar is generally well-hidden so there aren’t obvious traces that the procedure has been done.
